THE STRUGGLE FOR SOFIA. PHILOSOPHY AND SCIENCE IN THE VIEWS OF N.A. BERDYAEV

Abstract

The relationship between science and philosophy is discussed. Berdyaev, by trying to infer its meaning in the thought of the philosopher. Despite attempts to turn philosophy into science, Berdyaev stressed the essential impossibility of this happening. Philosophy and science deal with two spheres of existence that are not compatible with each other - those of freedom and necessity. Philosophy is the freedom of the spirit, seeking immediate knowledge in the unity between subject and object; science objectifies, distances, sets limits, deals with causal dependencies and is in thrall to World necessity. Yes, science is valuable to man, but its value is that of survival in the natural world, only philosophy can elevate the human spirit to the World secret, to reveal Sofia to him.
