Abstract

Part of the severe road accidents occur when vehicles move along a curve and lose lateral stability. This study presents the relationships for calculating the critical speed at which a vehicle starts to skid. An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the coefficient of friction during emergency braking on a wet pavement in Australia. Basic descriptive statistics and a confidence interval were provided. Based on the obtained results, the critical speeds of skidding were calculated for different curve radii. A comparison of the calculated speeds was also made under the conditions in Bulgaria.
