Abstract

The paper analyses some of the economic factors which determine state separatism in EU member states. Economic factors are considered one of the most essential driving forces to most separatist movements. There is no single theory, though, which has outlined the particular factors. On the other hand, separatism in EU member states has to acknowledge factors at all three levels of the multi-level governance system - subnational, national and supranational. By analyzing separatist movements in three founding members - Belgium, Italy and France, the author identifies economic factors causing and accelerating separatist movements within the states at the three levels of governance.
