Abstract

The concept of European Strategic Autonomy (ESA) has gained increasing prominence in recent years as the European Union (EU) faces a complex and evolving global landscape. This article critically assesses the EU's capacity to act independently in global affairs, examining the political, economic, and security dimensions of strategic autonomy. The discussion explores the EU's efforts to reduce dependency on external powers, particularly in the context of defense, technology and energy. It also considers the internal challenges that may hinder the realization of ESA, including the diverse interests of member states and the EU's institutional constraints. The article concludes by evaluating the prospects for achieving strategic autonomy and its implications for the EU's role as a global actor.
