DESIRE OR NECESSITY: THE MOTIVATION OF OLDER ADULTS TO ENTER CARE HOMES
Abstract
This article explores the complex dynamics between the desire and necessity of older adults to enter care homes. With the increasing aging of the population, many elderly individuals face challenges that make independent living difficult, such as social isolation, health problems, and the need for constant care. The article analyzes the key motives influencing older adults' decisions to settle in care institutions, including their desire for security, social integration, and access to professional services. Over the years, these motivations can evolve significantly. Initially, older adults may seek care homes for safety and assistance with daily activities, but as their circumstances change, their priorities might shift toward social interaction and engagement with peers. The article emphasizes the importance of recognizing these changing motivations to provide tailored support and services that cater to the diverse needs of older adults throughout their aging journey. Through a review of contemporary research and practices, the article offers an in-depth look at how new approaches in social care can address the individual needs of older adults.
