FALL RISK DURING PREGNANCY - PREVENTION METHODS
Abstract
Falls pose a serious threat to the health of pregnant women and can negatively affect normal fetal development. If the risks of falls are not taken seriously and timely action is not taken, minor injuries can result in soft tissue damage and sprains, while more severe injuries can cause fractures, preterm birth, fetal distress, placental abruption, intrauterine fetal death and other serious and unpredictable consequences.
Educational programmes are needed to prevent accidental falls. In turn, these to be integrated into parenting schools in which the midwife, as competent in the field raise the level of awareness.
In Bulgaria, fall prevention methods are not well established in the hospital setting. There is a lack of education among pregnant women about physical activity in the antenatal clinic, which automatically puts women in the risk group for falls. For the purpose of the report, an information leaflet for pregnant women was produced to raise awareness of fall risks and prevention methods. The brochure is intended for distribution in obstetric practices and gynaecological outpatient clinics in the city.
