Abstract

The article examines the nature and significance of wind soil erosion and identifies its impact worldwide and in Bulgaria on soil degradation and the reduction of soil fertility in agricultural lands. The conducted review and data analysis show that wind erosion (deflation) mainly affects the steppe and semi-desert regions of the planet. More than 40% of the Earth’s land surface is subject to deflation. The most severely affected regions are North Africa, the Near and Middle East, Central Asia, Southwestern Australia, the central part of North America, and others. In these areas, dust storms cause the destruction of large areas (tens of millions of hectares) of agricultural crops and the intensive removal of significant amounts (billions of tons) of fertile soil far from its place of formation. In Bulgaria, soil and climatic conditions are favorable for the widespread occurrence of wind erosion, with 24% or approximately 13.5 million decares potentially at risk. Soil losses due to deflation in arable land in 2022 amounted to 2,824.5 kt. A total of ten regions generates more than 70% of the projected losses, clearly indicating the areas most affected by erosion processes. About 65% of arable land falls into the categories of low to moderate risk (0.2-1.0 t/ha/yr), and only a small proportion (approximately 1.3%) is exposed to very high risk (>4 t/ha/yr). Despite the observed stability in recent years, wind soil erosion remains a significant risk to arable land both globally and in Bulgaria, requiring continuous monitoring and scientifically based solutions for sustainable land use.
