“DEFENSE MECHANISMS” IN CONTEMPORARY SLOVAK POETRY
Abstract
At the end of the twentieth century, a group of women poets emerged in Slovak literature who were later described by critics as the ANesthetic Genderation. The work of Nora Ružičková and Mária Ferenčuhová, however, has also been interpreted through other frameworks and associated with broader contemporary tendencies. Their poetry has been discussed in the context of experimental-deconstructive and anesthetic writing, as well as within debates on neo-feminism. Despite the variety of labels, one feature remains constant: their distinctive engagement with language. The emphasis on textuality has led critics to draw parallels between their work and that of the so-called Text Generation, another post-critical formation. A shared affinity for poetica coolness produces similar artistic strategies in the poetry of both groups. What the Text Generation has characterized as sterile - texts emotionally detached, rooted in banality and “invalidated” linguistic expression, resembling poems only graphically - reappears in the terminology adopted by these women poets, albeit under different names. This article focuses precisely on these terms, seeking to reveal the “defense mechanisms” of the writing subject embedded in specific creative approaches.
