THE TEACHER IN THE MIRROR OF TIME: THE IMAGE OF THE TEACHER THROUGH THE LENS OF BULGARIAN PERIODICALS AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY (A COMMENTARY ON THE NEWSPAPER BUDILNIK, 1898)
Abstract
The report presents a comprehensive analysis of the image of the teacher as reflected in Bulgarian periodicals at the end of the 19th century, specifically in the newspaper Budilnik from 1898. It combines a historical and cultural analysis, aimed at uncovering societal attitudes toward education, with a linguistic approach. The main objective is to trace both the sociocultural perceptions of the teacher’s role in post-liberation society and the key literary-linguistic features of the era.
The analysis of the newspaper text serves as a valuable record of the development of the Bulgarian literary language during this dynamic period. The study focuses on linguistic phenomena characteristic of the late 19th century, as reflected in the contemporary press. Through its interdisciplinary approach, the report seeks to highlight the inseparable connection between the state of the language, public consciousness, and the cultural values conveyed. Ultimately, the research contributes to a clearer understanding of the process of standardizing the Bulgarian language through the lens of public communication.
