Abstract

Family business can be driven by various motives and attitudes for each family member. Based on the security as basic human drive, it can be pursued in emotional and material world. Thus, we suggest a broad division of family business motivation as complex interrelation of intrinsic and extrinsic motives. They can be divided into two broad groups EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT (the desire of one partner to be constantly with the other spouse, whereas material security and gain come second) and MATERIAL ATTACHMENT (the desire of one partner to improve his or her financial and material well-being, even changing his or her spouse for another one, who is financially more reliable).
This emotional-material attachment axis raises many questions, including “How do we determine the basic motivation of one spouse to participate in a family business with the other spouse along this axis”, etc.
The purpose of this report is to present the research approach to for addressing the dominating personal motivation to stay with his or her spouse in a family business.
The thesis of our study is that members of family businesses have different personal motives and attitudes to family business, which can also be studied along the emotional-material attachment axis. The conceptual framework and design of the approach to study personal attitudes are outlined in view to further piloting and outlining psycho-economic model that highlights the various motives of each family member to be in the family business. The insights can be useful for research and practice analysis and prognostication.
