DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGES AND FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY OF THE PENSION SYSTEM IN BULGARIA

Abstract

Demographic changes in recent decades in Europe and Bulgaria are one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. The increased average life expectancy, the decreased birth and death rates, the dynamics of the age dependency ratio, the perceived correlation between financial risks and personal or systemic risk, the significant increase in state transfers to cover pension deficits, and individual "cut" expectations for pension benefits pose burning questions and serious challenges for the financial sustainability of the pension system in our country. This report seeks answers, which interweaves with the negative news about the coming economic consequences of the aging workforce and the insufficient risk-sharing mechanisms in the pension system, which are the cause of political pressure for reforms. The multi-fund pension model in supplementary pension insurance, based on the life cycle of the insured persons, is a solution for achieving higher replacement income and has a proven positive result in investment life insurance.
