THE PLAYER AS А NARRATOR: PLOT AND STORY IN CONTEMPORARY VIDEO GAMES
Abstract
The paper examines the transformation of classical narrative theory within contemporary video games. Core concepts such as story and plot (Aristotle, the Russian Formalists, Forster, Genette, McKee) are adapted to the context of interactive storytelling, where the player becomes both participant in and co-author of the narrative. Through an analysis of selected games, the study demonstrates that the plot is shaped by player choice and procedural mechanics, thereby redefining traditional notions of authorship. Video games are thus considered an art form in which each player constructs a unique narrative experience.
