Abstract

The shared opinion of university lecturers, teachers in general education schools, parents, and specialists from various professional fields is that the Bulgarian educational system does not meet the needs of today’s generation of students. Students themselves also become demotivated when studying subjects they consider irrelevant to their future lives and professional development. Among specialists and in society at large, it is argued that the curriculum is highly academically oriented, which leads to a loss of interest and further demotivation on the part of students. Instead of abstract knowledge, students need to work on real-world problems that are meaningful to them. Shifting the focus of education from the transmission of knowledge to the development of students’ abilities necessitates the competence-based approach as an essential requirement of the modern educational environment. A key characteristic of this approach is integrated interdisciplinary cross-curricular connections in school.
This article examines the possibilities for implementing cross-curricular connections in music education for students in primary schools. The aim is to present various ways in which the Music can be integrated with other school subjects. Such integration is expected to stimulate the holistic development of students. The study is based on ideas for cross-curricular connections in school proposed by students enrolled in the program Pre-school and Primary School Pedagogy at the “Angel Kanchev” University of Ruse. These future educators share concrete examples of connecting Music with other subjects taught at the primary level in general education schools.
